| Silverlight Streaming Available! |
I have been debating going to Flash, since it is so popular with YouTube-like sites. But my main issue is I have 5 years of movies, and over 1500 videos that I would have re-encode in Flash from the Masters.
I have been using Netflix online streaming, and they use Silverlight and the experience has been very good. Microsoft has really been staying on top of this new plugin, and it appears very stable.
We have been testing over the last couple months playing my current Windows Media Format videos with Silverlight, and I am pleased to make this stable way of streaming video available!
Why use a plugin like Silverlight? Many of you have fallen prey to the fact that Microsoft updates your computer, and will often break the registry setting where the codecs for Windows Media Player are kept. So one day you are streaming fine, the next day, no streaming. On top of that, even installing other media player software Quicktime or RealPlayer will break the connection between IE and WMP and suddenly you can't stream.
So having a plugin bypasses all this.
We are going to continue to test over the next month, and its likely I will need to add a new server (yeah, faster speeds!).
I can't guarantee the change will be smooth. There may be some down time on Streaming while we integrate security and the call to the new server. I don't think downloads will be effect. But ya never know when digging into the guts of your site.
Overall, I think this is such a good move. Silverlight is also compatible for Safari/Firefox for Apple OS, so many Apple people will now be able to stream.
PLEASE Upgrade to Firefox as it is the most stable. AOL users beware that old version of IE made by IE do have some issues and you will need to finally upgrade to a new browser.
