Antibody tests are a little Old School, but a great backup to the new DNA tests. Antibody tests are inexpensive or free, you can get instant results, but have a 30-60 day window of accuracy.
DNA tests are now available, showing exposure in 6-20 days. The DNA tests for the actual virus rather than waiting for your body to develop antibodies. I encourage everyone to use this test.
The new RNA tests are also now available, and sites like STDTestExpress will soon be offering it. RNA can show exposure in 3-6 days. DNA and RNA are not cheap, but totally worth the accuracy and peace of mind. IF you order a DNA test from STDTestExpress, they often do the Antibody test as a cross measure.
I am no Doctor, but getting tested and knowing your status and your partner's status is another line of defense. And with private testing, you can keep your insurance company out of the loop.

My own experience is to ALWAYS check for the bacterias- Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Many guys show no symptoms, and it is dang easy to get with very little contact.

Take the Early Detection test for HIV as often as your exposure and budget allows. They will often do an Antibody test as well to cross check results.
